Malaria chemoprophylaxis — first-line regimens
Atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, and mefloquine are preferred first-line agents for most regions where chloroquine resistance is present. Atovaquone-proguanil is taken 1–2 days before entry through 7 days after departure; doxycycline 1–2 days before through 28 days after; mefloquine ≥2 weeks before through 4 weeks after. Primaquine has a role against P. vivax / P. ovale when G6PD status has been confirmed.
