Remote ID under 14 CFR Part 89

UA.I — Regulations UA.I.A · Applicable Regulations

As of 2024-03-16, all sUAS operating in U.S. airspace must comply with Remote Identification (Remote ID) under 14 CFR Part 89. Three compliance pathways exist:

(1) **Standard Remote ID aircraft** — a drone with Remote ID broadcast built in by the manufacturer (per 14 CFR 89.501).

(2) **Remote ID broadcast module** — an add-on module attached to a legacy drone that broadcasts the required elements.

(3) **FAA-Recognized Identification Area (FRIA)** — a geographic area where non-Remote-ID-compliant aircraft may operate. FRIAs are sponsored by community-based organizations and educational institutions.

The broadcast includes the UAS ID, control-station location + elevation, takeoff location + elevation, timestamp, and emergency status. Operating a non-compliant aircraft outside a FRIA is a violation subject to civil and criminal penalties.
