Airspace classification and LAANC
Part 107 operations are permitted in Class G (uncontrolled) airspace without ATC authorization. Operations in Class B, C, D, and the surface area of Class E airspace require authorization from ATC.
**LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability)** provides near-real-time authorization in most controlled airspace at altitudes depicted on the UAS Facility Map (UASFM). Each airspace grid has a ceiling (0, 100, 200, 300, or 400 ft AGL) under which LAANC grants automatic authorization. Operations above the grid ceiling — or in airspace not covered by LAANC — require a manual waiver via DroneZone, typically with a 90-day lead time.
Class A airspace (18,000 ft MSL and above) is off-limits to Part 107 operations because the Part 107 altitude ceiling is 400 ft AGL. Operations in prohibited areas (P-prefix) are never authorized; operations in restricted areas (R-prefix) require coordination with the controlling agency.
